Activities in Florida Keys

ACTIVITIES IN FLORIDA KEYS. We did so many amazing activities when we were in Key West so I want to share my top 8 activities with you that you can’t miss doing when you are here! Key West sure does offer something for everyone! My favourite moments was for sure kayaking in the Mangroves, something I will never forget. I also loved snorkeling in the ocean and seeing the ‘Christ of the Abyss’, it was quite spooky but still exciting enough to make me do it! If you follow me on Snapchat: @MalinRichardson you could see my entire story from the turtle hospital, probably my favourite Snapchat story so far! I loved to be able to support these injured sea turtles and I also made a donation do their fund at the end of the tour that I think everyone should do, it doesn’t matter how big or small the donation is, everything makes a difference! We can’t let this species go, they are too beautiful! So here we got – my top 8 activities in the Florida Keys!

The Turtle Hospital – Opened in 1986, the Turtle Hospital treats injured sea turtles and, when possible, returns them to the wild! We got an educational tour when we arrived so we were introduced to the resident sea turtles and the hospital’s curative programs for loggerhead, green, hawksbill and Kemp’s ridley turtles. The hospital is believed to be the world’s only state-licensed veterinary hospital dedicated solely to the treatment of sea turtles.

This was such an amazing experience that I really recommend you to do if you are here! Everyone should support the injured turtles! I loved how informative it was, you learnt so much about the turtles and what the main issues are to why they end up here. The poor little turtles eat pretty much everything they come across in the ocean and some people unfortunately don’t understand that they can’t throw garbage in to the ocean so the turtles end up eating all the junk and turn ill. Luckily we have the turtle hospital that can spread the word and help these animals!

Location: 2396 Overseas Highway, Florida

The Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory – This was such a beautiful experience! We got to see so many stunning butterflies! One of the coolest ones was a blind butterfly that only lives for 4 days, it is one of the largest butterflies in the world! (You can see it in my pictures here below). This is definitely worth a visit while in Key West!

Location: 1316 Duval Street, Key West

Mel Fisher Maritime Museum – The museum holds the richest single collection of 17th-century maritime and shipwreck antiquities in the Western Hemisphere — including treasures and artifacts from the Spanish galleons Nuestra Señora de Atocha and Santa Margarita, which both sank off the Florida Keys in a 1622 storm.

Location: 200 Greene Street, Key West

Fort Jefferson / Dry Tortugas National Park -You take a 2 hour long boat ride to come out to this national park, it’s a day trip and you eat both breakfast and lunch on the boat! This was a very cultural trip and we learn so much about the history of the fort and what took place here back in the days! This is definitely something you should do if you enjoy American history! They also have a beautiful little beach on the island where you can snorkel!
Location: 100 Grinnell Street, Key West

Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum – Ernest Hemingway lived and wrote in Key West for nearly 10 years, finding solace and great physical challenge in the turquoise waters that surround this tiny island. At the Whitehead Street property, guests can step back in time and visit the rooms and gardens where the Nobel Prize winner spent the most prolific period of his writing career.

You can’t miss this place if you are in Key West, cats walk around in his home with five paws, some kind of a crazy mutation!

Location: Whitehead Street, Key West

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park – We did a day trip snorkel excursion with a boat that took us 40 minutes out in the ocean until we had reached our destination! We got to see a great selection of fishes and even lobsters! But the coolest of all was the huge statue of Jesus that stood on the bottom of the ocean looking up at us, quite spooky! If you google ‘Christ of the abyss’ you will see it! A very cool experience!

Location: Overseas Highway, Key Largo

Kayaking trip with Big Pine Kayak Adventures – Captain Bill Keogh has lived in the Lower Keys for more than two decades and has made his living on or in these waters as a naturalist guide, educator and professional photographer. He has been published in numerous books, magazines and publications throughout the world.

This was such a fun experience, I loved kayaking in the Mangroves and I recommend you all to try it! Not something you get to experience in your everyday life!

Location: 1791 Bogie Drive, Big Pine Key

Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square – Sunset Celebration is a nightly “street carnival” at Mallory Square overlooking Key West Harbor. It features arts and crafts exhibitors, street performers, food carts, psychics, musicians and more. Crowds of visitors from around the world flock to the celebration each evening to observe and applaud the setting of the sun over the water. (sunset at 8:10 p.m.) Something you can’t miss, it was quite the show!

    Hej Malin!

Kram!
